The Who Live
the formative years, 1964-1970
The Who are widely regarded as one of the best live bands of all time, their 1970s performances being considered their peak. However, it was from 1964 to 1970 that the Who's constant touring and reliance on live shows shaped them into the band they'd become in the 70s. They underwent dramatic changes; beginning as perhaps the most iconic mod band in England, with perfectly tailored suits and immaculate hair; developing into a rock and roll band hardly recognizable four years later at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.
This website focuses on the Who's live performances of the late 1960s, often overshadowed by those of the following decade. A summary of the Who's history can be found on the background page, and the timeline lists events important to shaping the band. The gallery includes images and footage from live performances; and films, websites, and books for further research can be found on the additional resources page.
